THE RAINBOW BOOK is a collection of essays and illustrations devoted to rainbows in particular, and spectral sequences in general, focusing upon the meaning of color (both physically and metaphysically) from ancient to modern times.
It is a veritable encyclopedia of rainbow lore: the art of the rainbow, including myth, magic, paintings, prints, and poems; the physics of the spectrum-light, color and the stars, and the Music of the Spheres; the metaphysics of color, exploring the colors of consciousness and auras (the rainbows around our bodies); as well as a history and catalogue of The Rainbow Show.
Included are poems by Vigil, Dante, Blake, Keats, Wordsworth and others; paintings by Giotto, Bosch, Van der Weyden, Durer, Rubens, Blake, Turner, Constable, and Church as well as the sacred art of Tibet. It presents ideas and images that tell what a rainbow can mean, not only to the painter, printmaker and poet, but also to the scientist and the theologian.
A special editorial feature of the book of seven chapters (each chapter colored in spectral sequence) is that, in each section, the information is offered at increasing levels of complexity. For example, in response to the question "What is a rainbow?" answers are given in a series of essays designed to appeal first to younger people, then the generally curious adult, and finally to those who are more deeply interested in the subject.
